To continue on from my last painting I decided to look at different colours and textures and how they can inflict emotions and feelings within a space. To get a grasp on this myself I researched 'The Psychological Properties of Colour' ....complex or what?  http://www.color-wheel-pro.com/color-meaning.html after sitting for a while and looking busy I thought I’d better do something but for two days I couldn’t get any ideas or inspiration.

Political baby knows what he's talking about!

Finding artist Richard Sweeney's work extremely interesting, check out his Flickr page @ http://www.flickr.com/photos/richardsweeney/ He makes these wonderful pieces from cardboard, paper, argon filled glass. The textures of all his work is amazing.

Space Anxiety

Endless hours of brainstorming and... Nothing! Until one morning on my way to college I decided I had to start somewhere. So I began to think what came into my head when I thought of Space... and what different spaces mean exactly. I got this idea to do a study of what different kinds of spaces, colours and textures around us can inflict different emotions and feelings on a person. I started painting, and painting wasn’t enough so I used charcoal on the canvas too and what I came up with was this...

The painting began to reflect a room of sorts (maybe a cell) the scratchings to the left of the canvas are a symbol of fear, panic and anxiety.

To the right of that reflects dark thoughts and confusion. Then as time moves on (and moving to the top right) there is ease, a sense of numbness and everything seems blank.

The Painting also works being viewed from different angles. At each turn a new aspect of the room is discovered be it a door or a wall or a birds-eye view of the room. I feel the canvas works best being placed on the ground so that viewers may circle the piece and have their own opinions.

To Sense My Space

Ok, so time to get stuck in, right? ....errrmmmm [insert awkward silence here] but I guess we’re not meant to know right away what direction to take. So, for our very first week which consisted of the handing out of the assignment title and non-stop introductions I decided I would get stuck in so I took a piece of paper with me everywhere and jot down every thought that came to me on the subject... This surprisingly was a lot, all conflicting ideas of course. Then when we were given our studio spaces that Thursday it surprisingly took a while to settle into working. But now that we’re into our second proper week I’m thanking god I’ve gained a little sense of direction! That first week felt like I was about to fall into an abyss of the nonsensical blabber going on in my head that seemed to lead me nowhere. But now that I have something to show (and now that I’ve figured out how to work the whole blogger thing)... Watch this space!
